Valdes Hoping To Make World Cup Squad

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes says he would love to be included in the Spain squad for the World Cup but admits he faces strong competition.

has been in excellent form in recent times for Barca and played an important role in helping the club win six trophies last year, but he has yet to be included in the Spain squad under current coach Vicente Del Bosque.

However, Del Bosque recently said that "Victor has earned the possibility of playing for Spain" and many feel that his form means he must be included in the 23-man squad that travels to South Africa. Valdes, though, knows he faces plenty of competition and is not getting carried away at this stage.

"It would be great and a source of great pride, but you have to be aware of the high standard of goalkeepers in Spain," he said. "You can see that on any day. There are some great goalkeepers and it's very difficult for the national coach to choose three out of so many.

"It's complicated, but that kind of comment makes me proud. It's like a prize for continuing to work. As a professional footballer, you always have to think about winning international caps. Whether or not it happens depends on many things."

At the age of 28, Valdes is now in the form of his life. Having previously faced criticism from supporters and the media, he is now the subject of praise, even if that makes him uncomfortable.

"People that know me know that I don't like praise. And I believe that on a collective level, praise isn't as good as it might seem from the outside."

Valdes believes feels Barca coach Pep Guardiola is responsible for his transformation: "Pep is the secret to everything we're achieving. He has taught me to enjoy myself out on the pitch."

Valdes, who has become the most successful goalkeeper in Barcelona's history with three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies and one Copa del Rey, has received just one call up to the senior Spain squad, when Luis Aragones invited him to train in August 2005 due to an injury to Iker Casillas. Some believe his strong personality has led to his exclusion from the squad in the past.

Valdes deserved to be in the squad after brilliant performances for the last 2 seasons. I think Bosque will pick him ahead of Reina.

His one-on-one goalkeeping recently has been phenomenal and should be in the squad.

Barcelona's Valdes: The Referees Are Professionals; The Pressure Will Not Affect Them

The Blaugrana keeper was on hand after training today for a press conference.

Barcelona's Victor Valdes, the goalkeeper who has conceded the fewest goals so far in La Liga, gave a press conference today after Barcelona completed their first training session of the week, as reported by Sport.

When asked to account for Barcelona's defensive stinginess, Valdes was quick to praise the rest of his team for their "talent, ability to maintain possession of the ball and their hard work defensively. The system helps a lot and we work every day."

Currently leading the race for the Zamora trophy for La Liga's best goalkeeper - decided by the number of goals conceded, Valdes was quick to brush off the individual praise, instead opting for collective accolades. "What is important to us is La Liga. The numbers and statistics help with confidence, but nothing more."

Obligated to answer a number of questions about questionable refereeing in La Liga in past weeks, Valdes insisted that Barca need not concern themselves with such matters.

"It is not logical to doubt the work of the referees. We need to dedicate our attention to ourselves and work every day to fight for the three points. The referees are professionals and I do not think the media pressure will affect their decisions," said the shot-stopper.

Finally, Valdes commented on Barca's next match at the Vicente Calderon against Atletico, a side the goalkeeper hailed as "a team with great offensive potential" with "two great goalkeepers" in Asenjo and De Gea.

Never understood why Valdes has never been Spain's No. 2 keeper, i mean, i know Casillas is a very good keeper (if not the best), but Valdes showed in our 2-0 victory over the scum ( :prayer: ) that he can perform against World Class players while Casillas couldn't, also take into account he currently plays for the best club in the world, Casillas + Valdes on the plane, Reina out!

So what, He'll be 4th or 5th choice? That sucks. Valdes deserves to be at least number 2 or better still, ahead of Casillas.

I count 30 on the pre-selection list and they can take 25, correct? So many this is VV's chance. I think he deserves to get on the plane at the very least.

23?
Very well, then, there are still 7 I'd leave off ahead of VV (including 5-6 keepers  )
