Mancini tells Balotelli: Back up Messi claim and smile
MANCHESTER - Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini challenged striker Mario Balotelli on Thursday to back up his claim that he is second only to Lionel Messi and to start cracking a smile.
Mancini said the 20-year-old Italian, who has scored two league goals since joining City from Inter Milan in the close season, still has some way to go before he can compare himself to the mesmerising Barcelona forward.
"I like that a player is confident in himself... (but) only if you play well every game and you score every game maybe you can say this," Mancini told a news conference.
"If he thinks what he said I think he must show (it) every game."
He also told the often moody Balotelli to lighten up.
"You need to smile to play football. That is the best thing you can do," he said.
Earlier this week when picking up an award for European under-21 player of the year, Balotelli was quoted by local media as saying: "There is only one player who is a little stronger than me - Messi. All the others are behind me."
Argentina forward Messi, the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year, has won four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues with Barca. He is also joint top scorer in La Liga this season with 17 goals.
Mancini's other striker to have made headlines this week is Carlos Tevez, who on Monday completed a U-turn as he committed to the club a week after handing in a written transfer request.
"I am happy we finished this situation and don't want to speak about this until the end of the season," he said.
City are third in the table, two points behind leaders Manchester United. Their next match is at Newcastle United on Sunday and Mancini said he expected defender Pablo Zabaleta to have shaken off knocks to the ankle and head in time to play.

Mancini: Balotelli deaf to my advice
Roberto Mancini has admitted that he is struggling to get through to hot-headed Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli.
Italian international Balotelli has scored six goals in ten Premier League games this season but has struggled to maintain his discipline on the pitch and was substituted during City's FA Cup clash against Aston Villa this week to prevent him picking up a second red card for the season.
As his former boss at Inter Milan, Mancini should have known what to expect when he spent £24 million on the 20-year-old. However, any thoughts the pair have a special relationship can quickly be dismissed.
"He is not listening to me,'' Mancini said. "I speak but I don't think he listens.''
However, as long as Balotelli continues to score and work hard for the team Mancini will be happy and the striker should be handed another chance to shine against Wigan this weekend.
"It is not important that he doesn't listen to me,'' he said. "What is important is that he does well, that he scores.
"But I know he can do better because I know his quality. He can change every game if he wants. He could score in every game. I hope, for him and us, he can understand this very quickly.''
Defender Kolo Toure will not face Wigan after being suspended for failing a drugs test and Mancini is likely to offer an instant recall to Vincent Kompany, providing the Belgium international reports for duty without pain after a recent hip complaint.
Mancini is also ready to welcome back midfield enforcer Nigel de Jong after a six-match absence with an ankle injury, although the combative Dutchman will have to be content with a place on the bench.
"Nigel has been out for a month so it is difficult for him to be 100%,'' Mancini said. "Maybe he could be on the bench to play for 20 minutes or half an hour. Then he can be ready for Dynamo Kiev next Thursday.''

Balotelli: Ronaldo would change me
Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli had claimed that he would end his wild ways if was given the chance to meet Brazilian legend Ronaldo.
Balotelli, 20, has attracted criticism for his behaviour since joining City in the summer and has been left out of Italy's Euro 2012 squad for the matches against Slovenia and Ukraine due to his sending off for his club against Dynamo Kiev.
However, the former Inter Milan star has maintained that he would change his ways if he could talk to his idol face-to-face.
"Introduce me to Ronaldo and I swear I'll behave to the end of my playing career," he told Le Iene. "I never met him, so you know when you see the idol of a lifetime it can change your way of thinking? There are many great players, but Ronaldo was the greatest and so one word from him is worth a thousand from the others."
Balotelli also jumped to his own defence, claiming that his behaviour has improved and that fans would soon start to see the full range of his talent.
"I already behave myself fairly well, but I'll try to stop doing those stupid little things,'' he added. ''It happens. You'll soon see the real Mario on the field!"
